Press Release
ELNUSA Creates Work with Friends with Disabilities
Jakarta, 22 December 2023 - PT Elnusa Tbk (Elnusa) is intensively carrying out community development programs as a form of corporate
social responsibility by empowering friends with disabilities. The program implemented was entitled Knitting Work with Friends with
Disabilities (MEKAR) which was implemented at the YPLB NUSANTARA Special School, Beji, Depok on (21/12).
Previously, Elnusa collaborated with Plasticpay to launch a Circular Economy Program by providing plastic waste management facilities in
the form of a Reverse Vending Machine (RVM) and Dropbox. Plastic waste collected through RVM and Elnusa Dropbox will be recycled by
Plasticpay into environmentally friendly raw materials. A total of 7,920 plastic waste bottles or the equivalent of 126.72kg produced 4 rolls
of felt and were directly created into creative products by YPLB NUSANTARA in this MEKAR program.
The importance of empowering MSMEs (micro, small and medium enterprises) owned by people with disabilities cannot be ignored. Most
people with disabilities face challenges in continuing their education to a higher level or accessing jobs in formal industry.
Empowering MSMEs can also strengthen social inclusion for people with disabilities. By having good skills independently, they can be
actively involved in community economic activities, interact with customers, and build relationships with the local business community.
This helps remove the stigma and discrimination that people with disabilities often experience, as well as promote a better understanding
of their potential among the general public.
The methods used in this program include providing education and training, namely material that begins with an introduction to sewing
materials and equipment, making patterns, and operating a sewing machine, until finally being able to make products such as tote bags,
pouches and laptop bags. After that, it goes to the Production stage where monitoring of the production process is carried out from raw
materials to goods that are ready to be marketed, and the business process can be realized according to what is desired. The next stage is
marketing by promoting the products produced by utilizing e-commerce in setting marketing strategies.
The MEKAR program is also in line with SDGs goals points 4 (four), 8 (eight), 10 (ten), and 17 (seventeen), namely knowledgeable education,
decent work & economic growth, reducing inequality and partnerships to achieve goals and reducing gaps. in terms of efforts to empower
and increase social and economic inclusion for all, regardless of gender, disability, race, ethnicity, religion or other status.
Corporate Secretary Elnusa Asmal Salam said, "it is hoped that by providing support starting from learning and methods for friends with
disabilities they will obtain a decent and independent livelihood," said Asmal.
Asmal added, “formal industries generally require higher education, certain work experience, or physical abilities that people with
disabilities may not be able to meet. "In this case, the MEKAR Program with Friends of Disabilities Elnusa provides an alternative that allows
them to use their skills and talents without being constrained by requirements that are difficult to fulfill," concluded Asmal.
