Sinar Mas Land and Chandra Asri Group Inaugurate the Collaboration of Asphalt
Road Construction with Plastic Waste Mix in BSD City
BSD City, December 13, 2023 – Data from the National Waste Management Information System (SIPSN)
of the Ministry of Environment and Forestry (KLHK) states that the input data from 310 regencies
throughout Indonesia shows that the national waste pile reached 36.1 million tons per year in 2022. Out
of this total national waste production, 64.01% (23.1 million tons per year) can be managed, while the
remaining 35.99% (13.02 million tons per year) is still not properly handled. To overcome problems related
to waste production, especially plastic waste, suitable solution methods are needed, one of which is to
implement the concept of a circular economy that can provide benefits for society, businesses, and the
environment.
Sinar Mas Land continues its commitment in providing innovative solutions for development which is
sustainable and environmentally wise. Therefore, Sinar Mas Land is partnering with PT Chandra Asri
Petrochemical Tbk (Chandra Asri Group) to develop circular economy-based infrastructure through the
application of plastic asphalt road at BSD City since 2021. By the end of 2023, the two companies will
successfully complete an 8.6 kilometer asphalt plastic road in BSD City area. This initiative is equivalent to
utilizing 164.2 million pieces of plastic low value or the equivalent of diverting 410.57 tons of plastic low
value waste from the landfill. The collaboration between Sinar Mas Land and Chandra Asri Group has also
achieved a milestone by making the BSD City area the first township in Indonesia to utilize plastic asphalt.
Acting Regent of Tangerang - Andi Ony Prihartono said, "It is an honor for us in the Tangerang Regency
to be selected by the Ministry of Public Works and Public Housing as a model for the implementation of
asphalt with a mixture of plastic waste. Thank you to Sinar Mas Land and Chandra Asri Group for
developing the plastic asphalt program; it is truly an achievement for us in the Tangerang Regency. The
application of asphalt with a mixture of plastic waste is not only an innovation in sustainability but can
also become a new milestone for infrastructure development in the Tangerang Regency. Of course, I hope
that this activity can be implemented on main roads and other streets in the Tangerang Regency. We
appreciate innovative technological breakthroughs as a manifestation of our joint commitment to
progress, producing sustainable solutions, and preserving the environment for future generations."
Director of Technical Development of Roads and Bridges at the Ministry of Public Works and Public
Housing (PUPR) - Yudha Handita Pandjiriawan said, "PUPR has conducted research on Plastic Asphalt in
2017, and we appreciate the Chandra Asri Group for initiating its application in 2018 on the factory road
in Cilegon. Moreover, Chandra Asri is currently collaborating with Sinar Mas Land for the implementation
of plastic asphalt. Hopefully, this can set an example for other property companies in the future, so that
we can collectively address the issue of plastic waste."

We are delighted to collaborate with Sinar Mas Land to implement our mission in using plastic asphalt as an effort to reduce plastic waste ending up in landfills. The success of the plastic asphalt project in BSD City reaffirms that every stakeholder plays a crucial role in addressing the plastic waste issue in Indonesia. Since 2018, Chandra Asri Group has been implementing asphalt with plastic waste mixtures through the 'Plastic Asphalt for Beautiful Indonesia’ or ‘Aspal Plastik untuk Indonesia Asri’ program, in collaboration with other stakeholders. This program is part of Chandra Asri Group's efforts to implement a circular economy model. For further information, Chandra Asri Group has held asphalt events mixed with low value plastic waste in various cities in Indonesia such as Cilegon, Tegal, and Semarang collaborates with the local government. Hence, Chandra Asri has also collaborated with educational institutions, namely University of Indonesia in Depok and Dian Nuswantoro University in Semarang. Until September 2023, the total length of asphalt plastic roads by the Chandra Asri Group and partners is 87.4 km with 751.9 tons of low value plastic waste has been successfully managed from the landfill.
