Indonesia's Domestic Gas Market Gains Momentum as PGN and INPEX Sign
LNG Deal for Masela Block
Jakarta – Indonesia’s domestic natural gas market received a notable momentum
with the signing of a Heads of Agreement (HoA) between PT Perusahaan Gas
Negara Tbk (PGN) and INPEX Masela, facilitating the sale of Liquefied Natural Gas
(LNG) from the Abadi Field in the Masela Block.
The signing ceremony occurred during IPA Convex 2025 (May 21, 2025) and was
attended by Indonesian President Prabowo Subianto. Representing PGN, one of
the key offtakers, was Arief S. Handoko, President Director.
PGN remains dedicated to aligning with government directives regarding the
commercialization and regulatory compliance related to the Masela Block LNG.
Following the pattern of eight previous agreements, the gas from Masela Block will
primarily serve domestic demands.
PGN appreciates the government's steadfast support toward securing the nation's
natural gas needs. The successful agreement with INPEX Masela solidifies the
utilization of gas from the strategically significant Masela Block.
Utilizing gas from Masela aligns with President Prabowo Subianto's vision of
collaboration among government entities, state-owned enterprises, and both
domestic and international private sectors to drive the energy transition and
decrease reliance on energy imports.
"PGN will leverage LNG from Masela Block as a complementary source to fulfill
domestic gas requirements. The gas from Masela Block is expected to significantly
enhance PGN's ability to continuously supply natural gas to customers," explained
Arief.
Gas supply from one of Indonesia's largest LNG projects may further catalyze
infrastructure growth designed to deliver natural gas directly to consumers. Robust
partnerships between government and business entities are anticipated to optimize
the Masela Block’s value, strengthening national energy security.
