Complete the Plastic Asphalt Road Target, Garut District Becomes
the Final Location with a Total Asphalt Coverage of 50.2 km
Garut, March 7, 2024 – PT Chandra Asri Pacific Tbk (Chandra Asri Group), Indonesia’s
leading chemical and infrastructure solutions company, proudly announces the achievement
of surpassing the target of 100 km of plastic asphalt roads, a collaborative effort with various
stakeholders such as the government, private sector, and associations. This significant
milestone is celebrated in Garut District, where Chandra Asri Group collaborated with The
Bakti Barito Foundation and The Garut District Government, contributing to the
construction of 50.2 km out of the total 100 km of plastic asphalt roads. The 50.2 km of
plastic asphalt roads were implemented from 2022 to 2023 and successfully managed to
handle 431.5 tons of plastic waste from the landfill.
The first trial of plastic asphalt took place in 2018 at Chandra Asri Group’s petrochemical plant
area in Cilegon City, Banten. Five years since the commitment was initiated, Garut District has
become the point of achieving the target and the region with the longest coverage. Through
multi-stakeholder collaboration, this program also serves as a collective step to support the
government's target to reduce waste by 30% and reduce ocean waste by 70% by 2025.
By the end of 2023, Chandra Asri Group, along with its partners, had constructed 120.8 km
of roads with a mixture of plastic waste, exceeding the initial target of 100 km. The total
accumulation of these road achievements creates new functions and adds economic value to
1,086 tons of plastic bag waste. Furthermore, each kilometer of plastic asphalt road utilizes
approximately 1.6 tons of plastic bags and increase road durability by 40%.
Drs. H Barnas Adjidin, M.M. M.M.pd, Acting Regent of Garut, in his speech that was
represented by Drs H Nurdin Yana MH, Secretary of the Garut District, stated that
according to the agreement that has been created, since 2022 Garut District has implemented
plastic asphalt on 6 (six) road sections with a total length of 16.56 km utilizing approximately
30.96 tons of shredded plastic waste, and in 2023 we were able to apply it to approximately
17 road sections with a total length of 33.68 km using 49.54 tons of shredded plastic waste.
"It is certainly an honor for us in Garut District to be chosen as a model for the application of
asphalt with a mixture of plastic waste. Thank you to the Bakti Barito Foundation and PT
Chandra Asri Pacific Tbk, who have developed the plastic asphalt program, which is truly an
achievement for us in Garut District. The application of asphalt with a mixture of plastic waste
is not just a sustainability innovation but can also be a new milestone for infrastructure
development in Garut District," explained Barnas.
Edi Rivai, Director of Legal, External Affairs & Circular Economy Chandra Asri Group,

solution to contribute to the plastic waste management in Indonesia through circular economy

Edi added that after achieving the target of 100 km of asphalt roads with plastic mixture,
Chandra Asri Group as a growth partner will continue to be open for collaboration opportunities
to extend plastic asphalt roads to realize Beautiful Indonesia.

The Indonesian Plastic Recycling Association (ADUPI) has been a strategic partner in Garut
Plastic Asphalt project in providing shredded plastic bag waste according to the technical
standards of the Ministry of Public Works and Housing. The collaboration with ADUPI ensures
that the quality of the material meets high standards and contributes to recycling efforts and
efficient plastic waste management. This collaboration not only provides significant
environmental benefits but also supports the realization of sustainable infrastructure
development in Garut District.
