Aa BukitAsam £ Press Release First in the World, Bukit Asam and BRIN Start Exploring Coal as Raw Material for Li-ion Batteries Muara Enim, 15 July 2024 - PT Bukit Asam Tbk (PTBA), a member of the MIND ID Group, collaborate with the National Research and Innovation Agency (BRIN) has started a pilot project converting Coal into Artificial Graphite and Anode Sheet as raw materials for Lithium-ion (Li-ion) batteries. The conversion of Coal into Artificial Graphite and Anode Sheet is the first in the world. Artificial Graphite is the main material for making anodes. The Anode Sheet is the electrode where the oxidation reaction occurs (positive pole), one of the important components for Li-ion batteries. The soft launched of the pilot project of Artificial Graphite and Anode Sheet was conducted at the Tanjung Enim Industrial Area on Monday (15/7/2024). The event was attended by Dilo Seno Widagdo, Director of Portfolio & Business Development of MIND ID: Arsal Ismail, President Director of PT Bukit Asam Tbk (PTBA) along with the Board of Directors PTBA, and Mulyadi Sinung Harjono, Director of Research & Innovation Utilization of BRIN Industry,. In his remarks, Dilo Seno Widagdo highlighted that all companies under the MIND ID Group are always committed to optimize the added value of Indonesia's mineral and coal resources, through a mandate to manage strategic resources and reserves, carry out downstreaming, and market leadership in order to become world-class companies. He hoped that this pilot project will continue to the commercial stage, he also emphases that the continuity of this project reguires support and in-depth study of its economic aspects. “MIND ID focuses on supporting the electric vehicle battery ecosystem. Therefore, this potential project must be fully supported by the entire MIND ID Group. This project is a strategic step that not only supports PTBA's business diversification, but also strengthens our position in the electric vehicle battery supply chain in the future," said Dilo. Meanwhile, Arsal Ismail said that the development of coal into Artificial Graphite and Anode Sheet is a form of PTBA's commitment to supporting Government policies to encourage downstream coal and maintain national energy security. In down streaming coal, developing coal into Artificial Graphite and Anode Sheet will also support the progress of the domestic electric vehicle industry," said Arsal. The need for Artificial Graphite and Anode Sheet will increase in the future, along with the growth of the electric vehicle industry. Not only for the electric vehicle industry, Artificial Graphite and Anode Sheet are also needed in other industries such as the energy storage industry, electronics and medical eguipment. This down streaming initiative is align with PTBA's vision to become a world- class energy company that cares about the environment, and supports the achievement of the Net Zero Emission (carbon neutral) target by 2060. On the same occasion, Mulyadi Sinung Harjono expressed his hope that the pilot project to convert coal into Artificial Graphite and Anode Sheet could bring benefits to strengthen Indonesia's position in the strategic raw materials industry. "We hope that the collaboration with PTBA will continue on producing useful research, and the pilot project for converting coal into Artificial Graphite and Anode Sheet will run as planned," he said. Information on The Conversion of Coal into Artificial Graphite and Anode Sheet: The conversion of Coal into Artificial Graphite and Anode Sheet is carried out through several stages. The first stage is the carbonization process of coal into semi coking coal or Coalite. Then Coalite is ground into powder, then goes through a process of soaking, heating, washing, drying and polishing until it becomes Artificial Graphite which is the main ingredient for Anode Sheet. Making Anode Sheet starts from mixing Artificial Graphite with other materials. The mixture is heated, then printed to form a sheet on copper paper.
